May 15th, 2010: John Jones Tribute Rugby Game!
John Jones is a well known figure in the Montreal Academic and Sporting community. Since moving to the area from his native Australia 27 years ago he has made an enormous impact on Rugby in Quebec and his contribution to the development and growth of the game here has been prolific. John recently suffered a medical set back while on rugby tour watching the British Lions in South Africa and had to return home quickly. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that was later found to be inoperable. He remains at the hard end of a fight against the disease.
John’s Rugby Club, The St Lambert Locks , which he had a major role in founding and perpetuating, along with his former club, The Montreal Irish, have combined to create an event in order to honor and pay tribute to him for his services to rugby.
On Saturday May 15th at 1 pm, a combined St Lambert and Montreal Irish Old Boys side will take the field against the visiting Ottawa Senators at the Ste-Julie Grounds of the Irish. This match will be followed by The Irish taking on the visiting Bermuda Mariners. There will also be two other matches featuring The Locks and old rivals RCM and a Womens match featuring players from both clubs.
This sporting action will be followed up with a pig roast and live musical entertainment and we expect to receive visitors from all parts of Canada, with some from the US and Overseas.
“John has been one of our great Montreal Rugby Characters and we want to give him a celebration of Rugby and dedicate the day to him” said Mark Gallagher, President of The Montreal Irish. He added “We invite every one whose life he has touched in Rugby and through his work as an enthusiastic History Professor at Champlain College to attend.
There is no entry fee, plenty of car parking spaces and some good rugby fun to be had”.
Please come and join us, John and his family from the noon hour and support our efforts in this tribute to John Jones.
